Throughout the ancient Indian scriptures, mythology and the trio of epics (Bhagavatham, Ramayanam and Bharatham), references to Devas or "Devanmar" (malayalam) are strewn with ruthless mercy. The question is have you ever wondered who these Devas are ? Or what do they stand for ?
The purpose of Devas first. The myth goes that they are in there because it is the way for nature to ensure that good beats evil. Pretty simple huh ? Well, maybe, if you don't think about it too much. Let us not get carried away and assume that Devas are something that is exclusive for Hinduism. There are ample references to these class of entities in Christianity - Damien, Angel, Srafi, Kherubi etc..In Islam Gabriel, Mikhael,Israfin etc fits this bill.
Back to Indian mythology, Devas are typically human beings born to a person named Kasya Prajapathi (topic of another discussion) and Adithi (Mom, yet another discussion). They are supposed to be around 3.3 million in number ! Now don't ask me how a person can have that many kids. I guess that's why it's called mythology. There are several classes of Devas, some popular ones are
1. Adithyan
2. Viswadevan
3. Vasu
4. Thushithas
5. Ashwinis
6. Kimpurusha
7. Grihakkanmar
8. Kinnaran
9. Lokapalanmar
10. Mathrukkal
and many many more...
IMHO, Devanmar are not really people or entities, these are probably logical concepts and everything we know in nature. Have you heard of Varuna Devan to represents the Wind and Kuberan who represents wealth ..You get the idea.
Like the organizations we all work in, Devalokam also had a pretty rigid hierarchy. 33 crore Devas, there are 33 leaders. These 33 leaders reported into the CEO of Devalokam, Indran.
I could go on and on, but stopping for now. Questions anyone ? Maybe we could build on that :)
