A Timeline for Indian Epics

Some people have asked whether we could go back to the drawing board at this point in the discussion and draw up a timeline of various events. This is an incredibly difficult task, as no effort in this regard will be undisputed

Here are a couple of nice articles on this topic:

http://web.cocc.edu/cagatucci/classes/hum210/tml/indiatml/indiatml1.htm
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_India

Since we can't really pinpoint the dates of when the epics occurred, I think we should start with the following assumptions

1. First there were vedas - Rig Veda, Sama Veda, Yajur Veda, Atharva Veda composed around 1500 BC
2. Then came Upanishads - starting around 800BC
3. Then it was the turn of Puranas like talking about creation (Brahma), sustenance (Vishnu) and extinction (Shiva)
4. The Epics came last around 300 BC and in the case of Ramayana, maybe even after Christ (AD). However there is no conclusive evidence that Vyasa and Valmiki lived during this time. It is possible that they created some scriptures several centuries earlier which were transcribed later. I don't know much about this

Kasyar - Brahma's Son or Grandson ?

Now that we talked about athidhi, it's only fair to mention Kasya prajapathy (kasyan or kasyar) as he had more of a kerala connection that most of the other characters. No one is entirely certain whether Kasyan was Brahma's son or grandson. There are conflicting references all throughout that talks about the difficulties stemming from this.

However, Kasyar was an all encompassing character with literally thousands of partners, and of course thousands of stories in which he is a part of. There is also an interesting reference somewhere that the known father of Krishna "Vasudevar" was none other than Kasyar, and of course it goes without saying that it was Athidhi who had the reincarnation as "Devaki" (one of those 7 births we discussed earlier)

Now to the Kerala connection: The legend goes that Parasuraman killed all the kshathriya kings and then conducted a yaaga as penance as well as for closure. At this point Parasurama gave all the land, mostly regarded as all of South east Asia today, to the Kasyar. One small part of this land started having communal riots (eerie similarity to what happens to this day) and the nature took things into her own hands and drowned this land to "Paathalam". Parasuraman used his axe at this point to save the land and hand it over to Kasyar again. So, using some fuzzy logic, one could make an argument that Kasyar was the first owner/leader of Kerala since the land Parasuraman saved is widely regarded as Malayala Naadu.
